The ceiling in the main room used to be flat all the way across, with acoustic absorbers hanging below it. I decided to make it one foot (30cm) higher by installing recesses between the rafters to improve the acoustics for mixing and recording,

The result looks really good, but sound must take priority, so I’ve installed deep absorbers in the recesses. The grids below those are space couplers, very effective sound diffusers that help preserve the live sound of the room without negative acoustic consequences.

All space couplers in place. Visually those reduce the ceiling to its original height, but are transparent to sound, so the acoustic benefits of the raised ceiling are still present.
